Toyo Tire Malaysia is installing a large-scale megawatt solar power generation system on the facility’s roof in Perak, Malaysia to significantly reduce the tire maker’s CO2 emissions. The solar array from Solarvest is likely to cover 96,000m2.
The first half of construction has already been completed, ahead of the system becoming fully operational in December 2023. TTM’s new solar array will generate approximately 19,000MWh a year while stopping 12,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere in the same period.
“We welcome Toyo Tire’s further focus on ESG efforts to create a sustainable business environment in Malaysia,” said Governor Saarani Bin Mohamad of Perak Province. “I am proud that Toyo Tire and Solarvest can work together for a more environmentally friendly future.”
TTM was established in May 2013 and supplies tires to Southeast Asia and further afield to North America, Europe and Japan. In addition to using solar power generation, the company aims to introduce energy-saving processes within its manufacturing activities. It will also promote decarbonization within its business operations.
Toyo Tire aims to become carbon neutral in 2050 and reduce Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 46% by 2030 – compared with levels measured in 2019.
