Australia’s rooftop solar sector grew strongly in 2022, with over 310,000 new systems installed, according to the latest Clean Energy Australia Report. This represents a new record for rooftop solar installations in Australia, adding nearly the same capacity as the Eraring Power Station in New South Wales.
The Clean Energy Council Chief Executive, Kane Thornton, said that rooftop solar is “playing a massive role in decarbonising the Australian energy grid and putting us on the path to 82 per cent renewable energy by 2030.”
Thornton also noted that the rooftop solar industry showed its resilience in 2022 despite facing several challenges, such as higher polysilicon prices, reduced subsidies, and supply chain issues.
The Clean Energy Australia Report also found that the average solar system size continues to increase, with the average system now being 8.84 kW. This suggests homeowners and businesses are becoming more ambitious in their solar installations.
The report also found that over 50,000 household battery systems were installed in 2022. This is a significant increase from the previous year and suggests that people are increasingly interested in storing their solar energy for later use.
