THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a move aimed at assessing the risks resulting from climate change and monitoring the mitigation activities, the state government has constituted Kerala State Climate Change Adaptation Mission (KSCCAM).
The mission will be responsible for tapping the benefits of the carbon credit economy and green funds. The government has also created nine posts of technical experts who will be the part of the mission.
Posts of chief resilience officer, climate change assessment specialist, carbon auditing officer, carbon capture and utilisation specialist, carbon monitoring and compliance officer, science content writer, administrative manager, multi tasking officer and an accountant have been created for the mission.
The mission has been tasked with a set of objectives like deploying cleaner technologies, combining economic development with mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, promoting green jobs, sustainable livelihood, developmental activities by taking into account climate change and disaster vulnerability and ensuring funds to mitigate climate change.
“KSCCAM intends to monitor and coordinate climate change matters with a vision to make Kerala carbon neutral, disaster resilient and a knowledge economy based on green jobs. The expected outcomes are to reduce emission of green house gases, enhance resilience and effective climate change adaptation activities, restore ecosystem services, develop skills for green jobs and sustainable livelihoods, implement developmental activities taking into account climate change and disaster risk. The mission will have 9 technical experts to immediately start the mission,” said Rathan U Kelkar, secretary, environment department.
In the state budget for 2022-23, finance minister K N Balagopal had announced that with the cooperation of various national and international funding agencies, other related institutions, central government departments, expert groups and industrial organizations and with planned projects, achieving the aim of net zero carbon emission by 2050 is the target of the state government.
